Hands Up, You're Surrounded

Not every story from the war happened on a famous battlefield.

Some of the best ones happened in places like this: a roofless barn somewhere in Holland, ankle-deep in water, in the middle of the night. No coordinates. No historical marker. Just a barn.

Late October 1944. Baker Company had just settled into one of these forgettable spots near Arnhem. The men were sitting on boxes to stay above the floodwater when a lone SS soldier walked through the door.

Six-foot-four. Black uniform. And he announced, in perfect English, that the barn was surrounded and they were now prisoners of the German Reich.

A forward observer in the corner pulled his pistol and shot him in the head.

The German's squad, waiting outside, heard the shot and ran back to their own lines.

The men of Baker Company dragged the body next to a dead cow already lying in the barn. Someone said he was an animal, and that's where he belonged. They all concurred.

This is the kind of story that gets passed down, retold, and picked up by the next company that rotates through the position. The kind of story you only half believe until you realize these men told it straight.

One thing that becomes clear when you spend time in Holland is how much of the war happened in completely ordinary places. No monument marks them. No sign points the way. Just fields and farms and barns that look more or less the same as they did in 1944. The barn in this story is gone. Dozens more like it are still standing.

Today, you can still walk the ground where the 506th operated during Operation Market Garden. The roads, the dikes, the farms are still there. The Island and Hell's Highway look remarkably like they did in the autumn of 1944.

If you're interested in exploring more of the real locations connected to Easy Company, Bergs & Burgs has put together two Holland guides to help you find them:
